Why opportunity no longer lives where most people are still looking.

When I was a kid, my brothers and I spent hours in creeks.

We’d wade around, roll up our jeans, and flip over rocks.

Not for any grand reason.

We were looking for bugs. Salamanders. Little fish. Critters.

Whatever we could find.

Sometimes there was nothing there.

Sometimes there was something unexpected.

We loved it.

It wasn’t efficient.

It wasn’t organized.

No one told us where to look.

It was exploration.

Flipping Rocks Is a Perfect Metaphor for Opportunity

Looking back, flipping over rocks is a perfect metaphor for opportunity.

Because opportunity has never lived on the surface.

It lives under things.

And here’s the life lesson, learned in those summer days:

When a rock stops producing anything,

you don’t keep flipping it.

You move.

You look for new rocks.

The Job Search Signal People Misread

Today, I see a lot of people stuck flipping the same rocks over and over.

Six months in a job search.

Twelve months in a job search.

Interviews. Silence. Rejections that don’t add up.

That’s a signal.

But not the one most people think it is.

It’s not about your worth.

Not your age.

Not your skills.

Not your experience.

It’s a simply a signal that there are no opportunities under those rocks anymore.

Opportunity Didn’t Disappear. It Moved.

We’re still doing $27 trillion in economic activity.

Opportunity didn’t disappear.

It moved.

It moved to new places.

It lives under new rocks now.

Not job boards.

Not org charts.

Not old hiring habits.

Where Opportunity Lives Now

Today, opportunity shows up as:

  • Problems to solve
  • Gaps to fill
  • Projects
  • Part-time but long-term leadership needs
  • Fractional work

This is where a growing share of real economic value is being created.

Fractional Work Is Where the Opportunity Is Hiding

Fractional work isn’t a downgrade from full-time employment.

It’s not a side hustle.

It’s not “just gigs.”

Fractional is what happens when work reorganizes itself around outcomes instead of titles.

It’s where companies go when:

  • they don’t need 40 hours
  • but they do need real leadership
  • real experience
  • and real accountability

Fractional careers exist because the work exists — just not in the old containers anymore.

There Is No Certainty — And That’s the Point

Like the creek, there is no certainty.

You don’t know what’s under the next rock.

That’s the point.

This path doesn’t run on guarantees.

It runs on:

  • curiosity
  • movement
  • and a willingness to keep checking new places

The Real Lesson

If you’ve been searching the same way for a year,

that’s not failure.

That’s information.

And maybe the real lesson is this:

Stop flipping the rocks you already know are empty.

Start looking where opportunity is actually hiding now.

And be willing to move.
